An Apex Duct That Kept Putting Dust Back on the Furniture
The owner wiped everything down over the weekend. By the next day the grey film was back. The supply run feeding the room was the reason.
The call came in about dust. The owner had cleaned the furniture over the weekend, and by the next day a fresh grey film had settled back on the same surfaces. Nothing they wiped down seemed to hold for more than a day.
We pulled the cover off a supply run and put a light down it. The dust here was not spread around the whole duct. It sat in a grey-brown band along the low side of the run, right where gravity drops it. That is the normal place for dust to collect, but there was enough of it that the system was lifting a share back into the rooms every time it ran.
Why Wiping the Furniture Never Held
In a working system, air moves through the ducts fast enough to carry fine dust along with it. Some of that dust falls out along the bottom of the run and stays put. The rest keeps moving and comes out through the vents.
Dust that comes back a day after cleaning is usually dust the system is still holding.
Once that low-side layer gets thick enough, the moving air skims the top of it on every cycle and carries a little back into the house. You clean the furniture, the fan runs overnight, and the same fine grey is back by morning. The furniture was never the problem. The run feeding it was.
What the Finished Job Looked Like

We checked the coil while we were in the system and left it alone, because it was clean and did not need the work. The duct was the source, and that is where the job stayed.
HOW WE HANDLED THE JOB (4 steps)
Free Inspection and Photos We opened the run, saw the band of dust along the low side, and showed the owner the photos before quoting a price.
A dirty coil can throw dust and slow a system, so we checked it before assuming the ducts were the whole story. The coil was clean and did not need work, which sent us straight back to the supply run.
Every vent covered and the system put under negative pressure, so nothing we loosened drifted back into the rooms. A rotating brush ran the length of each line, straight into a HEPA vacuum, and carried the layer out of the house.
We re-photographed each run, walked the owner through the before and after, and left the space clean.

Why This Happens in Apex
Apex runs its heating and cooling hard. The cooling season is long, the pollen through spring and summer is heavy across the Triangle, and a system that runs most of the year keeps pulling fine dust into the ducts. Give it a few years and every run builds a layer along the bottom. It is not a sign anything is broken. It is just what settled dust does once there is enough of it.
That is why a proper clean holds. Clear the low-side layer out of the runs and there is nothing left for the moving air to skim off and carry back to the furniture. Most homes go a few years before the buildup returns to a point you would notice it.
