Most of the air duct cleaning jobs we write up start with a problem: a smell, dust on the furniture, a damp crawl space. This Cary job did not. The owner booked a routine clean. Nothing had gone wrong; they just wanted the system checked. The house is on Charlemagne Court, a cul-de-sac of early-1990s homes in MacGregor West, near MacGregor Downs.

We pulled the cover off a supply duct and put a light down it. There were no piles of dirt and no lumps. Just a thin, even layer of dust over the whole inside. That is normal build-up between cleanings.

The Problem

Why a Thin Layer Is Still Worth Cleaning

A thin, even layer of dust does not block a duct, and it is easy to leave alone. The trouble is where it sits: on the inside surface the air crosses on its way to every room in the house.

A thin layer today is a band along the floor in a few years.

Dust keeps settling for as long as the system runs. The heavier dust builds up along the floor of the duct, and given time it turns into the kind of band we found in Apex. Cleaning it while it is still thin keeps it from getting there.

What the Finished Job Looked Like

Same duct, same camera position.
Before the visit
  • A thin, even layer of dust over the whole inside
  • No piles of dirt and no lumps
  • No heavy band along the floor of the duct
  • Normal build-up between cleanings
After Summit
  • Liner clear the full length of the duct
  • Dust pulled out of the house, not just loosened
  • Vents, registers and returns cleaned by hand
  • Before and after photos of each run

‍

We still cleaned it. That layer is what your air passes over every time the system runs. But when a duct is in decent shape, we say so, and if it does not need cleaning yet we tell you and leave. With no piles of dirt or lumps to break up, the job took 2 hours.

How We Handled the Job

Step 1: Free Inspection and Photos

We opened a supply duct, found a thin, even layer of dust and nothing heavier, and showed the owner the photos before quoting a price.

Step 2: Decent Shape, and We Said So

We told the owner the duct was in decent shape and the dust was normal build-up between cleanings. If it had not needed cleaning yet, we would have said that too and left.

Step 3: Sealed, Brushed and Vacuumed

Every vent covered and the system put under negative pressure, so nothing we loosened drifted back into the rooms. A rotating brush ran the length of each line, straight into a HEPA vacuum.

Step 4: Final Check and Photos

We re-photographed each run, walked the owner through the before and after, and left the space clean.

Why This Happens in Cary

Every duct in Cary collects a thin, even layer of dust like this one. Heating and cooling run most of the year here, and the Triangle's pollen season is long. The Raleigh metro area, which includes Cary, ranked 7th of 100 U.S. metro areas in the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America's 2026 Allergy Capitals report. Some of that pollen ends up in the ducts no matter how well a house is kept.

Whether you find a thin layer or a heavy band depends on time since the last cleaning more than on the age of the house. Homes on Charlemagne Court date from the early 1990s, the kind of older Cary neighborhood where ductwork has had decades to collect dust. This system had been cleaned before, and the thin layer we found is what normal use leaves behind between cleanings. Most homes do well with a cleaning every 3 to 5 years, and a home kept on that schedule usually looks like this one when we open it.
