A Durham Duct That Was Dirty All the Way Around
Most ducts collect dust along the bottom. This one had gone grey across the whole inside surface, and that told us where to look next.
The call came in as a routine clean. No smell, no dust blowing out of the vents. The owner was getting the house ready to sell and wanted the system looked at first.
We pulled the cover off a supply run in the back bedroom and put a light down it. The dust was not sitting in the base the way it normally does. It went the full circle of the duct, top, sides and floor, in a layer thick enough to hold a fingerprint. That pattern points at moisture, not just age.
Damp Changes How a Duct Gets Dirty
In a dry duct, dust falls out of the moving air and settles along the bottom of the run. The top half stays reasonably clear. That is why most before photos show a clean ceiling and a thick floor.
Dust along the bottom is age. Dust all the way round is moisture.
Put that same duct in a damp crawl space and the inside surface never fully dries. Dust stops falling through and starts sticking wherever it lands, including the top and the sides. Give it a few years and you get what we found here: a felt-like grey coating on every surface of the run.

The ductwork came back clean. We were straight with the owner about the crawl space, because if damp is the real driver then cleaning buys time rather than solving it.
How We Handled The Job
We opened the run, saw the coating on the top and sides, and showed the owner the photos before quoting anything.
Every vent covered and the system put under negative pressure, so nothing we loosened came back into the rooms while we worked.
A felt-like layer needs more contact than loose dust. The rotating brush ran the length of each line, straight into a HEPA vacuum.
We re-photographed each run and walked the owner through the crawl space, because cleaning will not hold if the damp stays.

Why This Happens in Durham
Plenty of Durham houses are older than their heating and cooling. Ductwork got fitted into crawl spaces years after the house was built, and a crawl space holds humidity right through a North Carolina summer. The duct ends up living in damp air for its whole life.
